The Rhodes Confucius Institute recently commemorated International Chinese Language Day, a significant occasion that highlights the complexity and cultural significance of the Chinese language and culture. Observed annually on 20 April, this day serves as a platform to promote the use of the Chinese language and celebrate Chinese profound cultural heritage. Established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2010, International Chinese Language Day underscores the importance of language diversity and the preservation of cultural traditions.

Chinese, renowned for its intricate characters and tonal system, is respected for its beauty and depth. Beyond mere communication, it serves as a reflection of Chinese history, traditions, and values. The selection of 20 April for Chinese Language Day pays homage to Cangjie, an ancient figure credited with inventing Chinese characters during the reign of the Yellow Emperor. This date, known as Guyu, is celebrated by the Chinese people in honor of Cangjie, highlighting the significance of preserving cultural heritage.

To mark the occasion, various events and activities are organised worldwide. Schools and universities host language workshops and cultural performances to raise awareness and foster appreciation for the Chinese language. At Rhodes University, a Chinese Language Day festival was held on 19 April 2024, providing an opportunity for students studying Chinese to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and language.

Professor Patrice Mwepu, as Director of Confucius Institute at Rhodes University, inaugurated the Chinese Language Day Festival with a
compelling speech on the significance of the Chinese language. In his address, he emphasized how the Chinese language has made its way into the world and stressed the importance of celebrating diversity through language. The festival continued with inspiring speeches by Chinese students, offering valuable advice to new students on how to navigate this new chapter in their academic journey. These speeches not only provided practical tips but also served as a source of motivation and encouragement for the students embarking on their language-learning journey. The event concluded with a fun game of Chinese broken telephone, adding an element
of lightheartedness to the festivities. Attendees were able to enjoy good food and music, further enhancing the cultural experience and fostering a sense of community among participants.

Reflecting on their experiences, students shared their motivations for studying Chinese. Rebecca Whittal, a second-year Chinese Studies student, expressed her curiosity about China's history and culture, while Athandile Johnston, a first-year Chinese Studies student, saw it as a valuable skill for future career prospects. Despite facing challenges, such as mastering complex characters, students like Mathabatha Msiza, also a first-year Chinese Studies student, found joy in overcoming obstacles and embracing the richness of the Chinese language. Their sentiments echo a common appreciation for the Chinese language and culture among students. While acknowledging the challenges, they emphasised the transformative impact of learning Chinese, which has broadened their perspectives and opened doors to new opportunities. As we celebrate International Chinese Language Day, let us continue to promote the importance of learning Chinese and embracing the diversity of languages and cultures worldwide.
