Organisational Sustainability

Organisational sustainability is one of the Environmental Sustainability Policy directives.

All decision making must take into account sustainability
Dr Sizwe Mabizela, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University.

Rhodes University strives to play a leading role in promoting and implementing measures that support a safe, healthy and sustainable environment. The environmental responsibilities outlined in RU's vision and mission statement together with the Institutional Development Plan, drive this commitment.

Sustainability Assessment Tool for the Integration of Sustainability in University Functions

Rhodes University PhD graduate, Dr Muchaiteyi Togo, investigated systemic approaches to integrating environment and sustainability across institutional functions and operations at Rhodes University.  This audit tool was further developed into a Unit-based Sustainability Assessment Tool assessing the level of integration of sustainability in university functions, and was used across Africa and Asia in at least 35 institutions of higher learning, the result of an UNEP/UNESCO/AAU partnership project with the Environmental Learning Research Centre, Rhodes University.

Recommendations emerging from this research include the following points: be upfront about mainstreaming environment and sustainability in university written statements, build a shared understanding of sustainability, define what contextual sustainable development issues there are in your organisation and its context, and adopt a holistic approach to mainstreaming and sustainability, for example, by developing interdisciplinary curricula, making it a campus-wide initiative, and supporting collaborative work in sustainable development issues.  See Stories of Change, Mainstreaming Environment and Sustainability in Africa Universities for the full publication or visit www.unep.org/training.

Organisational Sustainability Ideas

  • Seven guiding principles for sustainability leaders: (i) Vision beyond conventional wisdom. (ii) Take charge courageously. (iii) Serve the organisation, not your ego. (iv) Discover your potential. (v) Know yourself, control yourself. (vi) Build relationships, don't just rely on the top team. (vii) Tell the story, develop a value proposition.
