Intercultural Education China's Founder and Director, Ms. Linda Liao, and the Director of Overseas Recruitment, Ms. Talen Tan, visited the Rhodes University International Office and Career Centre to encourage Rhodes University final year and postgraduate students to consider teaching opportunities in China.

Liao has traveled the world and met young people from many different countries whose intelligence, love of life, and sense of social responsibility she can relate to. She said that from her interactions with them, she learned that young people are eager to work and learn to improve their abilities, expand their horizons and gain insights, which will benefit the educational system in China. Thus, this program of intercultural education was set up.

“The program's main aim is to recruit English speakers to provide excellent English-speaking teachers in English, art, music, drama and physical education who can focus on conversational English with students as early as possible in their schooling,” said the Director of Internationalisation, Orla Quinlan.

Quinlan said that on Wednesday, 12 April, Intercultural Education China would hold an online presentation of the programs offered to Rhodes University students and graduates. As part of the program, Intercultural Education covers candidates' airfare, work visa, accommodation, insurance, transportation, monthly cultural exchange activities, professional training during the program time, and a monthly stipend, an exciting opportunity for Rhodes University students looking to work and travel abroad.

Mr. Dingaan Booi of the International Office had the opportunity to participate in an Intercultural Education China sight visit in 2019 with a South African Higher Education delegation, including staff from two other South African Universities. Based on his experience, Booi strongly recommended that final-year students and Rhodes University graduates consider taking up this opportunity. "Spending a year abroad working and traveling can be life-changing, expand horizons, contribute to self-development, and aid in becoming a global citizen," said Booi.

Quinlan said English has become critical for successfully completing a degree in the Peoples's Republic of China. “Intercultural Education China, through this program, plays an essential role in bringing high-quality English teachers and education to many communities within China,” she concluded.
