Community Engagement

We have a strong sense of community within the residence and also within the Hall. Clothing collections, the Lilian Ngoyi community garden and Cynthia’s soup kitchen are just some of the projects that the residence is a part of. We actively try to get every resident to participate in order for them to give back to the Grahamstown community.

The year started with the bi-weekly shifts at the Lilian Ngoyi Community Garden by Centenary which were shared with either Victoria MxenGe House or Ruth First House dependinG on the roster put together by Lilian Ngoyi Hall Community Engagement Rep Catherine Pennels. A clothing and second-hand collection was started in the first weeks of second term and the collected items were taken down to the Centre for Social Development (Prince Alfred Street) where we were assured by Vuyani Zondi that they will be used to assist the Masincedane Soup Kitchen Project. A similar projected was initiated by myself again in the fourth term but all the collected items remain in the store room owing to Ruth First having told us to keep them and combine them at a later stage - a decision (and delay) which lead to both Comm Engagement reps from Joe Slovo House and Ruth First not following through. Therefore, the box remains in the boxroom. Third term saw Joe Slovo House visiting the House of Joy (pictures on facebook, with the relevant date) with special thanks to Kierin Sharpley, Matthew Hirsch and Stephen Hutchinson for having provided transport to and from the venue.
